The Five Valleys Mountain Bike Association (FVMBA) is the driving force behind mountain biking in Missoula. From building and maintaining trails to advocating for access and teaching the next generation, FVMBA is the backbone of Missoula's mountain biking community.
The Mission
FVMBA's mission is to build, maintain, and advocate for mountain bike trails in the Five Valleys region around Missoula. As a chapter of the International Mountain Bicycling Association (IMBA), they work with land managers, government agencies, and private landowners to create and protect riding opportunities.
Trail Building and Maintenance
FVMBA's most visible work is trail building and maintenance. They organize regular trail days where volunteers build new trails, maintain existing ones, and repair damage from weather and use. Recent projects include new trails at Marshall Mountain and improvements at Blue Mountain.
How to Get Involved
The best way to support FVMBA is to become a member. Membership funds go directly to trail building and advocacy. You can also volunteer for trail days — no experience necessary, tools are provided, and it's a great way to meet fellow riders. Check their website for upcoming trail days.
Advocacy and Access
FVMBA advocates for mountain bike access at the local, state, and federal levels. They work with the Lolo National Forest, Missoula County, and the City of Missoula to ensure mountain bikers have a voice in trail management decisions. They also advocate for new trail development.
Education and Community
FVMBA offers skills clinics, group rides, and educational events throughout the year. They partner with the Missoula Mountain Bike League to support youth cycling. Their annual events, including trail festivals and fundraisers, bring the community together.
The Impact
Thanks to FVMBA's work, Missoula has over 100 miles of mountain bike trails within 30 minutes of downtown. Their advocacy has secured access to trail systems that might otherwise have been closed to bikes. Every trail you ride in Missoula has been touched by FVMBA's work.
